Please my fellow Nigerian, let us give the President a chance to try his policies on fuel sudsidy removal and the deregulation of the economy. Though the impact will be felt in the short term but i hope we stand to gain much from this policy in the long term; lets take a typical example from the stopage of motor cycle as a means of transportation in Calabar the Cross River State Capital, it was difficult to move from one place to the other in the first two or three month as well as rendering many cyclist jobless but in the long run we have seen and felt the impact of the govt. decision to ban OKADA in Calabar – Less car/bike accident within the city, less fatality, a more healthy environment. The hitherto jobless cyclist have also ceased the ‘unfortunate’ circumstance to learn one trade or the other while others have learned how to drive cars and thus turned taxi drivers. Fellow Nigerian youths and elders, lets give our President a chance as we still have time to revolt should the policy fail in the first year or two.

What is the solution to this rampant and ever increasing incidence of bribery in the police force? Do the Nigerian Police understand that Corruption is destructive to personal, and governmental structures and capacity?
My experiences I had while travelling along Etim Ekpo – Iwukem Road to Aba and Aba – Ikot Ekpene Road exposed the reality of what is have been hearing and reading about police extortion and exploitation from innocent road users. What I saw, pointed to the fact that CORRUPTION has destroyed the legitimacy (if any) of the security agency.
At every poll along the roads aforementioned, there is a police check point. I believe the reason for this check point is to protect and ensure the security of life and property of the road users as well as checkmate the infiltration of the society by criminals who may want to transport harmful weapons or substances via this route. But, this check point has been turn into EXTORTION POINTS, the drivers plying this roads a made to part with a NON-NEGOTIABLE FEE of N50 at every ‘check point’ manned by the men and women of the Nigerian mobile police force while they are expected to stop their vehicle and come down to settle the HIGHWAY PATROL men who sit comfortably in their duty vehicle, with an amount not less than one hundred Naira. At a particular check point within Aba main town the driver brought out fifty naira and gave it to the police man, to my greatest surprise the police man refuse it demanding for an additional N50. At another point along the Aba – Ikot Ekpene Road – precisely close at Ikot Umoh Essien – my bus driver wanting to deliver the bride, the money fell on the road and he was order to come down and pick the money and deliver it properly into his (the policeman’s) hand. What a Country.

These corrupt officers (fathers and mothers) extort scarce public resources into private pockets, literally undermining the security of the nation, and eroding the social and moral fabric of nations. They no longer stop the vehicle for the proper checks as they case may be; just N50 gives you a visa to drive around legitimately irrespective of whether you are carrying a contraband or not. These men are not doing their duty, instead, they are focused on making money illegally and there is no clear difference between the Nigerian police offices and highway armed robbers – they are all brutal, selfish and extortionist. Will it be possible for Nigeria to effectively tame the scourge of police extortion on our highways?
STOP BRIBERY TODAY!

According to METRO, Agu Irukwu was chosen by 54 per cent of voters in a competition organised by Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Metro. He was picked from a shortlist that also included US president Barack Obama, former South African leader Nelson Mandela and US human rights activist Martin Luther King. Former investment banker Mr Irukwu, senior pastor of Jesus House in London since 1994, has come under fire for his outspoken views on homosexuality.
The married father of three signed a letter sent to a national newspaper, attacking laws which force churches to accept gay people. Mr Johnson, who voted for Muhammad Ali in the poll, has previously been criticised by gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell for accepting Warwick University law graduate Mr Irukwu’s invitation to a carol service.

The competition takes place during Black History Month, which champions black culture, history and heritage, and seeks to recognise the contribution made by black people to Britain.

Stand up for what is RIGHT.

CALABAR - Ibrahim Muhammad, Zamfara Commissioner for Information, has called on the government to ban traditional rulers from holding political meetings with politicians.

Muhammad made the call in a memorandum he presented to the 42nd Meeting of the National Council on Information and Communication, which began in Calabar on Oct. 26.

He said that traditional rulers’ involvement in partisan politics posed a threat to their position as guides to “how we communally live, intermingle, interact and prosper together, as a people”.

Muhammad said that traditional institutions were the only lasting legacy that the rest of the world could identify to be “originally what belongs to us”.

“Their arbitrary function in moments of dispute between families or communities is grossly undermined by their active participation in politics.”

The commissioner said that those empowered by circumstance, try to bring the paramount rulers to convey to their lieutenants, down to the people “all sorts of campaign instruments and stop at nothing to win elections”.

“In this manner, they are being recruited by mainstream politicians, cowed and misdirected to outrun the bounds of inheritance and unwittingly overstep the ancestry limits which unfortunately compromise their position in history.”

He noted that traditional rulers who joined the ruling party that failed to win re-election were subjected to all manner of threat and intimidation, while their colleagues who were neutral are demoted or deposed by the winning party.

Muhammad said that this had become part of “our democratisation process and the outcome, include loss of lives and property, as well as permanent memories to live with”.

He also drew the council’s attention to the involvement of civil servants in partisan politics, especially at the beginning of every electioneering campaign, in the bid to enhance their prospect of promotion or posting, when elections are won or lost.

“The council may have to take a look at the adverse effects of the involvement of career civil servants in partisan politics on the civil service system.

“It may also wish to look into ways of exempting traditional rulers and civil servants from active participation in politics,” he said.

Muhammad called for sustainable mass media campaign to enlighten the traditional rulers, civil servants and all stakeholders on the need to ban traditional rulers and career civil servants from participating in anyway in politics.

The commissioner was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Hajiya Dije Gusau.

The 3-day conference is being attended by state commissioners for information, permanents secretaries in the state ministries of information and their counterpart at the federal level.

It is expected to be officially declared open on Oct. 27 by the Minster of Information Labaran Maku.

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Girls Power Initiative (GPI), has called on the National Assembly to enact a law on violence against women.
The NGO also said the national assembly should stop debate on the Indecent Dressing Bill sponsored by Senator Eme Ekaette, saying the passage of the bill will increase violence against women.
The Co-ordinator of Calabar Centre of GPI, Professor Bene Madunagu, addressing the press in Calabar in reaction to the murder of Miss Grace Ushang in Maiduguri, Borno State while participating in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme said all Nigerians should condemn the death of the corps member.
Madunagu also expressed regret that the Director-General of the NYSC rather than condemn the rape and violence that led to the death of Ushang was blaming the late Corps member for not taking security precautions.
“Rather than denounce this for the crime that it is and reassure our young graduates on national service that well-being preoccupies the highest levels of decision making, the Director-General mere advised Youth Corpers to ‘take their personal security seriously because whatever we provided is not enough. They must learn to be security-conscious’. Pray, how?” she queried.
She recalled that the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on women, Senator Eme Ekaette had in 2008 introduced a bill in the Senate to prohibit indecent dressing.
She said that at the public hearing on the Bill, it became obvious that the Bill proposes to “grant intolerably dangerous powers of arrest and invasion of the most intimate privacies of the woman’s body imaginable to both police officers and ordinary citizens to undertake vigilante action against women they mere perceive to be indecently dressed”.
According to Madunagu, “The compounded crimes that killed Grace Ushang painfully return our attention to the pervasiveness of violence against women in Nigeria and the growing resort to vigilante action to police vague notions of feminine propriety and decency”.
She said Ushang’s story demonstrated the fallacy of the justifications for laws like Senator Ekaette’s Indecent Dressing Bill, stressing that those who wish to commit crimes of sexual violence need no excuse.
“They must be treated like the predators they are. If a woman, like Grace Ushang, dressed in regulation clothing prescribed by the Federal Republic of Nigeria is considered to be so indecently dressed as to be put to death by the most vile acts of violence imaginable;
“How do we guarantee the safety and security of Nigerian women in the uniformed services, such as the armed Forces, Police, Prisons Service and immigration?” she asked.
She said to immortalise the memory of the slain Grace Ushang, the National Assembly should pass a law on violence against wome

JUST SOME THOUGHTS

It is a pity that our leaders continue to take the citizens for a ride. Our society is becoming lawless day by day; the leadership and institutional discipline that should be the bedrock upon which our future should be built is fast being eroded.

It has become clear that sometimes, to make progress, our leaders needs to be wiped like cows to drive in some ideas into their brain. There is a strong need to ensure – before election (selection) or appointment – that there exists a balance between theoretical and practical buoyancy in the thinking faculty of the species of Homo sapiens inhabiting this country.

However, it was not always like this in the beginning, the Awolowo, Azikiwe and Ahmadu Bello of this country were men rich with ideas and ideologies. These were men who positively impacted on the society through their ideas and strive for a better living condition for the citizenry. Their effort, though may be seen as regionally or ethnically directed, was still focused on giving the inhabitants of the region a sense of belonging and happiness.

It is a tragic pity that we have metamorphosed to a stage where scruples has been a virtue for the fools, to a time where ideas are no longer relevant in politics and governance, a time where fraudulent money can answer all thing – even power and human life. A time where our future is becoming an issue of political gamble. A time where no institution is functional, a time where the children prefer living in exile while their home burns to ashes. Is there still light in the tunnel?
